What Rihanna, Kanye West and Other Celebrities Bring to Sneaker Brands

$
0
0

Despite the loaded roster of sponsored athletes Adidas and Puma have, Kanye West and Rihanna provide their respective brands a desirability that the sports professionals don’t.

“In the last golden era of sneakers, the energy drivers were the athletes. Bo Jackson, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Dennis Rodman, Michael Jordan: These were the GOATs of our society that were influencing what we were buying,” said Jeff Staple, founder of Staple Design.

Today, Staple added, it’s moved into an era of celebrities — and a lot of them are musicians.

“Sneaker companies are signing up music acts as if they were record labels,” he said. “That’s moving the needle right now, and it’s definitely working, because these artists do a collaboration and people go gangbusters-crazy for it.”

But it’s not just musicians that brands are aligning with: Kylie Jenner is a Puma ambassador, Karlie Kloss is with Adidas, and Nike outfits Kevin Hart.

Nike Kevin Hart Gym

Kevin Hart working out in Nike.

For Chase Ceparano, co-owner of Huntington, N.Y.-based boutique Rise, the reason brands team with celebrities and style influencers is because they have a look more consumers desire than athletes.

“Frankly, I’ve never heard anyone ever say they’d like to dress like LeBron [James], Russ Westbrook, [James] Harden or any of these top-level athletes. What we do hear about and see clearly though is the influence of rappers, musicians and socialites in terms of the personal style making an impact on our audience,” he said. “These are the individuals we follow on social media. These are the personalities many of us borrow from, in one way or another.”

But are they bringing in major sales? Matt Powell, global sports industry analyst for The NPD Group, says no.

“If you look at what LeBron sells in a year, it’s significantly more than any celebrity has sold,” he said. “I think if you have a whole lot of celebrities in aggregate, they can be meaningful, but there’s no a single celebrity out there that has sold even Kobe [Bryant]-esque kind of numbers — and Kobe’s not that important anymore.”

But Powell still believes there’s value in celebrity and style influencer partnership.

“What you’re trying to do is connect with the fans of celebrities or athletes and get them to buy your product. In the case of celebrities, the money the brand has to spend is relatively small, so [endorsements] are fairly easy to do,” he said. “And they’re ephemeral, meaning they’re not signing 20-year deals with people, and if that celebrity doesn’t get you a return, you move on to somebody else.”

Turns out Kanye West isn’t the only celebrity shoe designer beloved by other celebrities.

Although his Yeezy Boost sneakers are incredibly popular among the Hollywood set, Rihanna’s designs for Puma are quickly becoming another favorite of the stars. She released her first collaboration with Puma in conjunction with her company Fenty in late 2015. The Creeper sneakers were a hit — Footwear News named the shoe our Shoe of the Year at the FN Achievement Awards on Nov. 29.

The sneakers have been released in several colorways, with the most recent velvet iterations arriving earlier this month. Celebrities Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne, Sofia Richie, The Weeknd, and Gigi and Bella Hadid are fans of the kicks. Today a new celebrity fan came on board: Madonna. She was spotted wearing a black and white pair while traveling with her son.

This could be the chance of a lifetime for Rihanna fans.

In an effort to raise money for her Clara Lionel Foundation, Rihanna is offering the chance to win several prizes. The contests run through Dec. 31, and entrants can choose to donate a range of dollar amounts that coordinate to a certain number of entries. The highest is a $1,000 donation, which would allow you 250 entries.

For those who haven’t been able to get their hands on a pair of her Fenty Puma Creepers, this is your opportunity. One of the contests would not only award the winner with the entire line of Creepers that have been released, but also the chance to design a custom pair with Rihanna herself. The Creeper was named the Footwear News Shoe of the Year at the FN Achievement Awards on Nov. 29.

Upon accepting her award, Rihanna said, “I didn’t expect people to love it the way I do, and the way they’ve supported it means so much to me.”

There’s also another shoe-related prize in the contest. During her Anti World Tour, Rihanna wore a pair of custom chaps created by Giuseppe Zanotti. One lucky winner will get their own pair of the canvas thigh-highs.

Puma’s Latest Running Sneakers Are Cool in a Whole New Way

Is signing up for a 5K, 10K or marathon on your 2017 resolution list? Then Puma has some new sneakers that’ll help get you ready — and one of them is a favorite of speedster Usain Bolt.

On New Year’s Day, the German athletic brand is releasing new updates to two of its popular performance running styles. The Speed 600 Ignite 2 and the Ignite 3 PWRCool are both intended for men and women and boast Puma’s latest technical innovations.

Speed 600 Ignite 2
This sneaker has a new and improved upper, made with a lightweight engineered mesh that could help shave seconds off your time. It also features a dual-layer midsole infused with Puma’s proprietary Ignite foam (which was developed to offer responsive cushioning and optimal rebound) and comes with a molded EVA Supreme sockliner for immediate step-in comfort.

And the designers of the shoe took special care with the women’s version, crafting it on a women’s-specific last that contours the female foot. In addition, the sockliner has an arch support that accommodates the biomechanics of the female body.

The coolest part: It’s super-light. The men’s shoe weighs just 10.3 ounces, and the women’s is 8.5 ounces.

Ignite 3 PWRCool
When the weather starts to heat up this spring, Puma suggests slipping into this new technical shoe, built especially for running in warmer temperatures. The shoe features Dri-Freeze technology in the collar lining to instantly cool feet on contact, and the Dri-Freeze also extends to the sock liner for maximum ventilation.

The sneaker also is equipped with Puma’s Ignite midsole and an ultra-grip outsole.

The coolest part: It comes with Usain Bolt’s seal of approval. The Puma-sponsored athlete said in a statement, “Living in Kingston, I’m used to running in really hot weather, but there are days when the heat is just unbearable. The Ignite 3 PWRCool can handle this, no sweat. Tried and tested.”

Sneaker consignment store Stadium Goods has released a countdown of its best-selling shoes in 2016, and some of the results may catch you off guard.

While the models that make up the top 50 shoes aren’t exactly shocking — Air Jordans, Yeezys, NMDs and Ultra Boosts dominate the list — some of the most popular styles were unexpected.

Adidas NMD R1

Stadium Goods’ No. 1 shoe of 2016, the Adidas NMD R1 “Triple White.”

The year’s No. 1 shoe was the “Triple White” Adidas NMD R1 from the “Monochrome Pack,” which was released in March. While there’s no denying the popularity of the all-white sneakers and the NMD franchise, the fact that an easily soiled stark white look took the top spot may surprise some.

Other NMD R1s in Stadium Goods’ top 50 include the “Core Black” (No. 45), the women’s “Raw Pink” (44), “Red/Core Black” (38), “Black Charcoal” (34), “Red/Red” (33), “Core White/Core Black” (30), “Cream” (29), “Japan Black” Primeknit (28), “Core Black/Blue” (27), “Core Gray/Core White” (17) and “Core Black/Red” (6).

Adidas Ultra Boost

Stadium Goods’ No. 2 shoe of 2016, the Adidas Ultra Boost “Triple White.”

Coming in at No. 2 is the Ultra Boost 1.0 “Triple White,” a sneaker that was released in 2015 but had continued success throughout 2016. The Ultra Boost 1.0 also shows up at No. 3 in “Core Black,” while three Ultra Boost 2.0 colorways are scattered throughout the list.

Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma Slides, in the “Shell” colorway, came in at No. 46.

Did Kanye West’s Artist Big Sean Leave Adidas to Sign an Endorsement Deal With Puma?

One of rap’s biggest young names is rumored to be expanding his footwear portfolio.

The Shoe Game reports that Big Sean, 28, has become the newest member of the Puma family, joining the ranks of other celebrities and musicians such as Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and The Weeknd. The news comes after the rapper, who’s signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music imprint, has been spotted wearing Puma sneakers on a number of recent occasions, including his “Moves” music video, which was released Jan. 4.

Big Sean previously had a sneaker deal with Adidas that included the release of three collaborative sneakers from 2012-14: two Pro Model II colorways and a Metro Attitude.

Puma’s recent collaborations with music artists have been fruitful, most notably the Herzogenaurach, Germany-based brand’s work with Rihanna. Celebrities can’t get enough of the singer’s Fenty x Puma collaborations, and her Creeper shoes were chosen as the 2016 Shoe of the Year at the 30th annual Footwear News Achievement Awards.

Although there has not been an official confirmation from Big Sean or Puma, an announcement is expected soon. Meanwhile, the rapper will release his fourth album, “I Decided,” on Feb. 3.

Kylie Jenner is keeping quiet about some details of her latest venture, but she has teased the “secret project” on Instagram.

In three Polaroid-style photos shared on the social media network today, the reality star posed wearing a blond cropped wig, a barely-there gold slip and nude Yeezy heeled lace-up ankle boots.

Jenner recently credited her stylist Jill Jacobs for her fashion-forward rise. Notable shoe brands on Jacobs’ radar are Jimmy Choo and Olgana Paris. She’s the former assistant to Monica Rose, a stylist who counts the Kardashian-Jenner family as clients.

Piquing the curiosity of her fans, she captioned the snaps, simply, “#secretproject.”

No matter what the undertaking involves, it will likely be a success under Brand Kylie.

Last year she debuted her Kylie Cosmetics beauty line, which includes her previous lip kit selection. She also fronted an ad campaign for Puma’s Fierce KRM sneakers. The shoes feature circular crystal patterns on the toe box in the same color as the upper and lace detail around the ankle.

What Jeff Staple Is Planning for Staple Design, Reed Space and Extra Butter in 2017

You may think your schedule is busy, but chances are industry veteran Jeff Staple has more on his plate than you do.

In 2017, the founder of the now defunct New York City retail destination Reed Space plans to tackle multiple projects, including resurrecting the aforementioned banner. But that’s not his only major project of the year.

“There’s the reopening of Reed Space that will occur in 2017, as well as helping my brethren over at Extra Butter with their 10th anniversary — I’m sort of in charge creatively of what goes on as well as a massive renovation with their LES store,” Staple told Footwear News. “[And] 2017 is the brand Staple’s 20th anniversary. I’m fortifying all the projects, events [and] collaborations that are going to happen.

“I don’t think there are too many people navigating the 20th anniversary of an apparel brand and the 10th anniversary of a retail store in the same year, while trying to reopen their original retail store. I also try to have a personal life somewhere around that.”

Staple admitted that navigating the anniversary of his acclaimed Staple Design label — which launched in 1997 — comes with challenges.

“It’s important for me to be able to reflect on those last two decades but not dwell on it too much, either, and not rest on our laurels for what we’ve done for the past 20 years,” he said. “One of the hardest things to do is push forward when you have two decades worth of history under your belt. The natural inclination is to just sit back in your La-Z-Boy and reminisce on 20 years. It’s really important we keep pushing forward.”

To keep on track, Staple said the biggest investments he will make in his professional endeavors are clarity and focus.

“I feel like [after] being in this game 20 years now, I’m only beginning to have razor-sharp focus. It’s like a martial arts master who after doing the same maneuvers for 20 years now finally thinks, ‘I’ve got this maneuver down now,’ ” he said. “My clarity and my mental focus is really sharp — not only in my actions, but also in the barometer of what’s happening in the world. I feel super plugged-in to the temperature of the planet right now. Two decades in, it feels like I’m one with what’s happening in the world.”

But what Staple won’t do is 2017 is make some of the same mistakes he did in 2016 — including underestimating the demand of his sneaker collabs.

Staple Puma Suede

All three Staple x Puma Suede colorways.

The design legend reimagined two of Puma’s most beloved silhouettes in September, the Suede and the Blaze of Glory. The looks were released with an atypical retail strategy: The Blaze of Glory was released worldwide, but the all-white Suede was only available in North and Latin America. The black Suede dropped in the Asia Pacific, and the gray Suede was made available in Europe and the Middle East.

Staple estimated that 5,000 pairs of all four styles hit retail. How many does he think should have produced? Double.

“I’m glad we sold through,” he said, “but there are a lot of people that wished they could get their hands on them. We thought we were being relatively realistic and not conservative with the numbers, but in hindsight we were still conservative.

“When we pre-allocate numbers, we don’t play those games that other brands do, like ‘This is what we think we could sell,’ and then subtract 25 percent just to create stupidity and shenanigans. We actually sit there and say how many we think we could sell through completely so we won’t be stuck with inventory. But you can’t Monday-morning quarterback these things.”

As a continuation of its “Do You” campaign, Puma is getting set to release the Swan Pack Collection on Feb. 1. This time, the company is featuring dancers from the New York City Ballet wearing the sport-meets-lifestyle collection.

Ahead of the release, FN got to test out the collection alongside two of the company’s dancers, Olivia Boisson and Mimi Staker. Puma worked with the ballerinas to get feedback on the women’s collection, which features swan-inspired details.

Both training and lifestyle sneakers are included in the collection, which Boisson told FN comes as a welcome relief from the ballet pointe shoes she wears all day.

“As you can imagine [pointe shoes] are not the most comfortable things,” Boisson said. “I love that [the Puma Fierce Strap Swan sneakers] don’t have laces, so when I’m running to and from rehearsal I can slip them on and off.”

When she’s not rehearsing or performing, Boisson says she enjoys working out to stay in top shape. So what’s the secret to a ballerina body?

“A lot of dancers including myself do Pilates. It helps you lengthen [your body] out,” she said. “I took a lot of spin classes when I was injured. I love the music and the vibe. I know some [dancers] who do yoga — it’s very calming and Zen, but I’m more of a pump-up person.”

The Swan Pack Collection drops on PUMA.com, in PUMA Stores and in worldwide retailers on Feb. 1.

Women marched en masse across the country today to protest President Donald Trump and advocate for women’s rights.

Among the crowds that gathered in show of solidarity for women in Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Park City, Utah, among other cities, were celebrities using their voices — and fashion — to join the chorus of demonstrators highlighting an array of concerns under the new president’s leadership.

How Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss & Gigi Hadid Are Changing the Face of Fitness

Hair up, barefaced and sweaty, Gisele Bündchen went one on one with a punching bag in Under Armour’s 2014 “I Will What I Want” ad campaign. She was taking those “just a model” insults head on after people questioned why the brand would sign her.

While Bündchen might have seemed like an unconventional choice to some, the idea of a model representing an athletic brand struck a chord. Other labels that once relied primarily on sports stars in their marketing efforts have followed suit in the past year. Now model-centric campaigns — targeted to the underserved female market — are emphasizing the holistic person, flaws and all.

Enter model Gigi Hadid.

Gigi Hadid #PerfectNever Reebok

Gigi Hadid at the #PerfectNever Reebok event in NYC last December.

As a continuation of Reebok’s “Be More Human” initiative, the company launched #PerfectNever, an effort celebrating the perfection of imperfection in the fight against complacency, with UFC star Ronda Rousey at its center. Fast-forward to October, when an unexpected face took on the #PerfectNever movement.

“It seems strange that a model who is supposed to be perfect is the face of a never-perfect campaign, but that was the point to me,” Hadid said during a Reebok event last month in New York. “Everyone always calls me perfect, and I’m just not. I wanted to do something that, at the end of the day, I don’t feel suffocated by [for] not being allowed to be myself in some way.”

While some questioned the decision, Inga Stenta, Reebok’s senior director for global brand communications, emphasized, “We are working with Gigi because it’s about who she is. Yes, she happens to be a model, but it’s her values and the message that she is delivering and the role model that she is playing for all these women [that is the reason why].”

Reebok’s push to challenge women to break boundaries by accepting their own setbacks and embracing their inner strength is changing the fitness narrative, which has been traditionally focused on the perfect athlete.

“We knew ‘Be More Human’ created a new platform to send out a message differently,” said Corinna Werkle, head of design and apparel excellence. “It’s a truthful message, and consumers look for brands with a point of view — and they clearly live according to this one.”

Reebok is continuing to create connection points with its consumers.

At the New York event, Hadid joined more than 100 women and a panel featuring Olympic medalist Aly Raisman and actresses Lena Dunham, Zöe Kravitz and Ruby Rose to speak candidly about redefining perfection.

Hadid told Footwear News about choosing her battles in the fashion industry: “You fight for what’s important to you, and the people that don’t agree sometimes don’t deserve to understand. That’s why I try to defend the things that I need to, and if not, then I hope people just look for the best in others.”

The Adidas by Stella McCartney spring ’17 campaign starring Karlie Kloss is another example of a brand celebrating the rule-breaking attitude of the modern female athlete.

Kloss joined the McCartney team last summer and has been a representation of the multifaceted women. “She inspires and empowers a new generation of women to push themselves further in achieving their goals without compromise,” said McCartney in a statement.

Young female consumers are looking to each other for inspiration, according to Matt Powell, VP and sports industry analyst at The NPD Group. “The control today is in the hands of the consumer,” he said. “So where is the consumer getting their direction from? No. 1 is their peers.”

Plus, these consumers live on social media and identify with of-the-moment influencers such as Hadid and her younger sister, Bella, who recently joined the Nike family. (Combined, the Hadids have 38 million followers on Instagram.)

While Nike and Reebok are embracing the female consumer in a bolder way to capture more of the growing market, Puma has already seen major success with its female-driven celebrity initiatives.

Powell pointed to Puma’s blockbuster success with Rihanna’s Fenty creeper. “Sales went off the charts and have been hot ever since,” he said. “Puma has a very strong women’s business. You can see a correlation.”

For Puma, Rihanna is just part of the cast of characters representing the company’s values.

“It’s important to have a mix of partners that reflect our consumers and the varied interests of our consumers,” said Adam Petrick, global director of brand and marketing. “In that way, it makes sense for us to reach out beyond the traditional ambassadorship.”

Model Cara Delevingne was recently added as the face of Puma’s “Do You” campaign, which aims to inspire confidence. “She’s helped us tremendously with women’s sales,” said Petrick. “We have seen a bottom-line influence. She also has that doesn’t-care-what-anybody-thinks mentality, and that is so perfectly reflective of how we’d like our brand to be received.”

With the “Do You” campaign, Puma, like many of the athletic brands following this trend, is encouraging women to view themselves without the limits or constraints that are placed on them by society.

“She wanted to do something more powerful,” Petrick said about Delevingne. “She is more than just a model.”
