If you’re making progress on your New Year’s resolution but need a little extra motivation to take it to the next level, the right pair of shoes could be just the thing you need to flourish.

To get the most bang for your buck, consider a pair of training sneakers versatile enough that you’ll be able to wear them at the gym and after the gym. But there’s a comfortable middle ground of shoes that look just as good as they perform.

Venus and Serena Williams: A Look Back at Their Early Years on the Court

This sister act is seemingly unstoppable. Venus and Serena Williams will take the court Saturday to battle it out in the Australian Open final. The match comes nearly two decades after the duo faced off for the first time in their professional careers in the second round of the 1998 Australian Open.

Venus, 36, and Serena, 35, continue to defy expectations and rule U.S. women’s tennis — even as many younger players rise through the ranks. Serena is going for her 23rd Grand Slam championship, which would be a record in the modern Open era. Venus, meanwhile, has racked up seven titles during her storied career.

Serena Williams Venus Williams Australian Open

Venus Williams and Serena Williams huddle during a double’s match at the 1998 Australian Open.

Both sisters will wear Nike kicks for Saturday’s match, but they’ve been involved with other major shoe companies through the years, too. In 2000, Venus signed a contract with Reebok — a deal that was believed to be the biggest ever for a female athlete at the time. Serena, meanwhile, was a Puma athlete early in her career. She signed with Puma in 1998, before Nike picked her up five years later and never looked back.

The pair leave the practice court at the Australian Open in 1998.

Through it all, the sisters have remained fierce competitors on the court, although Serena has dominated in recent years. Off the court, however, they’re extremely close and the best of friends.

No matter who wins, it will be a Williams.

Taraji P. Henson kept her feet comfortable before walking the red carpet at the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The “Hidden Figures” star took to Instagram while on the way to the event to show off her pink Fenty Puma by Rihanna faux fur slides, courtesy of the designer herself.

Henson thanked Rihanna for the slides, adding how she wished she could wear the shoes all night.

Beauty is pain, as they say, and Henson swapped the slides for a pair of Jimmy Choo Minny sandals. She also opted for a glamorous Reem Acra dress for her red-carpet ensemble, which would have actually matched the Puma footwear if she did decide to go with the more comfortable shoe choice.

Exclusive: En Noir’s Rob Garcia Shares How to Style His Puma Collab

En Noir designer and creative director Rob Garcia, a former sneaker aficionado, has gravitated toward wearing other footwear styles. But that didn’t deter him from lending his vision to a pair of Puma silhouettes for a collab that would satisfy both luxury consumer and the sneakerhead.

“If I’m going to wear a sneaker, it has to stay true to how I dress aesthetically. Essentially, these are sneakers for who I was growing up and who I’ve become later on in life,” Garcia told Footwear News.

The collaboration, which he described as a balance between high fashion and sneaker streetwear culture, was executed on Puma’s Ignite EvoKnit and Clyde looks. The two black monochromatic looks are an expression of his “seize the night” mantra, represented by the words Carpe Noctem stitched into each shoe.

“Things come alive in the nighttime for me creatively more than any other time,” Garcia explained.

Puma x En Noir Ignite EvoKnit Black

For someone who doesn’t wear sneakers often, Garcia admitted making kicks that look stellar with jeans was a constant thought throughout his design process.

“Sometimes sneakers look better with a sweatpant, a trackpant, or something like that. But today, I’m wearing the EvoKnit with jeans, and it looks great,” Garcia said. “The way the jeans stack over the EvoKnit looks better than I could have imaged. And because they look right with jeans, I knew they would look right with sweatpants or trackpants.”

But Garcia’s design prowess and ability to merge streetwear with high fashion alone didn’t make collaboration attractive to Puma. The athletic label found similarities in its identity and the En Noir brand’s DNA.

“We’ve had things [in the past] like Puma Social, where we celebrate nightlife and people looking to have fun. And Rob’s concept with Carpe Noctem was an automatic fit,” David Ballin, Puma North America’s team head for regional creation, told FN. “We love to celebrate having a good time and [Garcia’s] Carpe Noctem is about seizing the night and making sure you live every night to the fullest.”

And Puma ensured it would continue to live life to the fullest with En Noir beyond this one collab. Ballin and Garcia confirmed an all-white Ignite EvoKnit will arrive in August, and more sneakers — with an accompanying apparel collection — will drop in fall ’17. The latter will feature a new Puma silhouette that has not yet hit the market.

The Puma Ignite EvoKnit En Noir and the Clyde Fleur de Lis En Noir arrive Wednesday and retail for $180 and $110, respectively. The shoes can be picked up at Barneys, Footaction and the Puma Lab powered by Foot Locker.

Puma’s Second Legacy Collection Features Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier’s High School Colors

Walt “Clyde” Frazier wore Puma during his NBA playing career. Now the brand is honoring the place he played ball prior to turning pro with its Black History Month line.

The second installment of The Legacy Collection, which features three footwear styles, is in stores now. The shoes in the second drop feature blue and gold, the colors of Frazier’s high school in Atlanta, the David T. Howard School.

In the second release from The Legacy Collection are the Ignite EvoKnit, Sky II Hi and Clyde styles. The Ignite EvoKnit, a modern silhouette from Puma, retails for $150 and features a blue and gold premium knitted upper and ankle cuff. The line also features two retro looks, the Sky II Hi ($100) and the Clyde ($110). The Sky II Hi is executed with a blue leather upper with gold accents, and the Clyde boasts white leather upper paired with Puma’s formstripe in blue.

The first release boasted two Clyde iterations: the Clyde Bball and the Clyde Wool. The upper of the Clyde Bball ($130) is inspired by the texture of a basketball and boasts gold eyelets, a nod to Frazier’s collection of basketball trophies. The Clyde Wool ($120) resembles Frazier’s high school letterman jacket, executed with a blue wool upper and gold highlights.

Retailers such as Foot Locker and puma.com still have pairs for sale.

Exclusive: Roc Nation’s Emory Jones Talks Puma Collab and Friendship With Jay Z

Jay Z made sure you knew who Emory Jones was through song while Jones was incarcerated on drug-related charges. Now a free man, the Roc Nation lifestyle specialist wants to build his own name and reputation within the fashion industry.

Jones earned his nickname “Vegas” scoring big on a Las Vegas trip during his hustling days prior to Jay Z’s rap superstardom. His collaboration with Puma, dubbed “Bet on Yourself,” is an attempt to use winning big as a theme to inspire a positive mindset and encourage people to take a chance on themselves.

“I got the name ‘Vegas’ for all the wrong reasons,” Jones told Footwear News. “I want to send a positive message. I thought about who ‘Vegas’ was and flipped it — casino, gambling, bet on yourself.”

The two-shoe collaboration is executed on Puma’s retro tennis silhouette, the Star, and the Ignite cushioning-infused Dual running style. The project, which also features apparel, is available now on ycmc.com, in Shoe City doors and at the Puma Lab inside Foot Locker’s latest New York City store in Times Square.

The Star and Dual retail for $69.99 and $99.99, respectively.

Emory Jones Puma Bet on Yourself

The two shoes from the Emory Jones x Puma “Bet on Yourself” line with apparel.

Before his scheduled speaking engagement on Friday at 5 p.m. ET at Foot Locker’s NYC store on Broadway, Jones spoke with FN about how the association with Jay Z has impacted his perception in the fashion industry, his shoe choices for the “Bet on Yourself” line and the consumer he thinks the collaboration will resonate with.

Footwear News: What kind of consumer is buying the “Bet on Yourself” collection? Who is this made for?
Emory Jones:
From the feedback I’ve been getting, it doesn’t have a demographic. You’ve got the corporate guy, for example, like a good friend of mine who owns Eboost, [Josh Taekman]. I help him see sneaker culture through me. Then you’ve got the young kid who sees the message of betting on yourself and says, “That resonates with me.” Females, too. Some of the biggest support I’ve been getting is from females.

You didn’t choose Puma’s most popular silhouettes for this collab. Why opt for the Star and Dual styles?
EJ:
It’s easy to go with what’s working. This is about showing people something different. The Star is so strong for them, but I don’t think they realize how strong it is. And I love the Dual sneaker because of Ignite [cushioning]; it’s a comfortable sneaker. Puma was surprised because they never had anyone do a technical sneaker like that; it’s always been a running shoe, and they never thought of it in lifestyle.

Emory Jones Puma Bet on Yourself Star

The Emory Jones x Puma “Bet on Yourself” Star.

How did you come up with the look for the shoe?
EJ:
The colorway came from the era I grew up in, the late ’80s and early ’90s, when we wore fatigue jackets and camo [camouflage]. The green is the core, and the blue is the base; I used the blue because it’s like a pair of good blue jeans you could wear with anything. And the red was because it needed a subtle pop.

How has being around Jay Z helped you professionally?
EJ:
To have a lead and a brother that has set so much tone for us in culture is a plus. To soak that energy up, to be around him and see how creative his mind is, see how smart he is, is like still being in school. It’s like having the professor with you every day. All you have to do is give me the information and I’m going to run with it. That is a blessing.

Do industry insiders see you as just Jay Z’s friend or do they take you seriously as your own entity within fashion?
EJ:
They’re getting to know me personally and how I operate; they’re starting to respect me and understand that I’ve got my own mind, that I’m my own man. But it is a blessing for me to have [Jay Z] as a support system.

Emory Jones Puma Bet on Yourself Dual

The Emory Jones x Puma “Bet on Yourself” Dual.

How, if at all, do you use your affiliation with Jay Z to your advantage?
EJ:
I think sometimes I don’t utilize Jay and my team the way I should. I’m still trying to prove myself. I’m not walking in the door saying, Roc Nation Jay Z. You’re not getting that from me. If you’re looking for that when I walk into your office, I’m walking right out of your office. I’m not using him to my benefit. I stand for something. What we’ve built with our friendship stands for something, and I’m not jeopardizing that.

Did you ever think that you’d be here now, working with Roc Nation and collaborating with Puma, after your incarceration?
EJ:
Yes, because that was just a situation; that’s not who I am as a man. Everybody who goes through that type of scenario isn’t a bad person. When I did my time, I never let it discourage me from becoming who I was going to be.

Adidas Is Suing Puma for Trademark Infringement

$

On the pitch, soccer stars compete in Adidas and Puma cleats. Off the pitch, the two brands are competing in court.

Adidas America Inc. filed a suit against Puma North America Inc. on Friday in the United States District Court for the District of Oregon — Portland Division, citing trademark infringement, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices, among other claims.

The suit is over a soccer cleat Adidas stated bears “a confusingly similar imitation of Adidas’ three-stripe mark.” In the filing, Adidas stated it has used the parallel three stripes on its shoes for more than 60 years, and has been selling shoes with the mark in both the U.S. and worldwide as early as 1952.

The cleat pictured in the filing is the Puma EvoPower Vigor Camo, which retails in men’s sizing for $274.99.

In the filing, Adidas stated “the infringing cleat imitates Adidas’ three-stripe mark in a manner that is likely to cause consumer confusion and deceive the public regarding the source, sponsorship, and/or affiliation of that footwear.” The suit also explains that sales of the Puma cleat identified in the suit is “unlawful and is causing irreparable harm to Adidas’ brand.”

Adidas is seeking monetary damages, Puma’s profits from the alleged infringing cleat and a court order barring the brand from continuing to produce the cleat.

This is the latest in a slew of litigation, which includes Adidas’ attempt in August in a court in Düsseldorf, Germany, to keep Puma from selling its NRGY shoe. The Puma look features a midsole made of an innovative synthetic called expanded thermoplastic polyurethane that is similar to Adidas’ Boost.

Footwear News reached out to Puma for comment on the litigation, and will provide an update if and when it becomes available.

The shoes, which first hit the runway last fall in her spring ’17 show (also in Paris), include a new take on her popular slide. Instead of a faux-fur upper, it’s now done in a satin upper with a bow knot detail and will be offered in olive and blush.

The rest of the footwear in the collection, which is described as “18th century French neo-classical meets modern sporty,” is also done in these blush and olive hues.

“It is as if Marie Antoinette went to the gym!” Rihanna said in a release. “I’m very thrilled to finally see the collection out there. It was such a fun and rewarding experience to create the collection and seeing it come alive on the runway and in our campaign. Now I can’t wait for everyone to wear it their own way, mix and match and represent their Fenty x Puma favorites in their everyday style.”

This season, a lace-up heeled boot is offered in blush leather with Puma’s signature formstripe on the side.

Similar to the slide, there’s also a sneaker with a satin bow detail and a sneaker-boot-platform hybrid.

“I Decided that this was the best path for me creatively, and we’ve been hard at work making sure this first collection is something special. Let’s get it,” he said in a post on Instagram.

In the meantime, Big Sean will be representing the brand by wearing styles from its Classics line, including the Puma Suede and Clyde sneakers. Puma will also be supporting the rapper as a brand sponsor on his summer tour promoting his fourth album, “I Decided,” which recently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the death of legendary rapper the Notorious B.I.G. To commemorate the occasion, Puma collaborated with Coogi, which is one of the many brands the rapper helped bring to prominence with his trendsetting street style.

For this collaboration, Puma utilized the Australian knitwear brand’s colorful and intricate patterns for two looks that are unmistakably Coogi. The silhouette of choice is the Clyde, Puma’s classic lifestyle model which was once a basketball sneaker made famous by NBA Hall of Famer Walt “Clyde” Frazier.

Puma’s Coogi collaboration includes two colorways of the Clyde.

This collab includes two colorways, the first of which launched today for $200 in a colorful all-over authentic Coogi pattern. The unique knits ensure that no two pairs are alike, while a stark white midsole adds contrast. Accents include gold foil branding and 18K gold plate lace tips and eyelets.

Cara Delevingne and Puma Team Up to Support Refugees in Uganda

Cara Delevingne and Puma have teamed up to shed light on refugees in Uganda.

Delevingne on Wednesday posted a video on Instagram that shared some of her experiences during a trip to Uganda to meet refugees through Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation campaign supporting girls in Uganda, India, Malawi, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Liberia.

The video is a preview of a documentary series slated to launch in July that will “highlight stories of female empowerment and change.”

“Uganda, out of any country, has the most refugees in the world that have come in — more than 700,000,” Delevingne says. “Any of these kids could be the person that cures cancer. They just don’t have the opportunity, and all they want is an education.”

Delevingne says the goal of the series is to encourage women and girls to work together and lift each other up. Girl Up focuses on ensuring that adolescent refugee girls in Uganda have access to education. In addition to providing quality education, Girl Up also focuses on hiring and retaining female teachers to ensure that girls feel safe and supported at school.

Last week, Puma launched its latest campaign featuring Delevingne. The #DoYou campaign, which has Delevingne wearing the new Puma Suede Heart sneaker, encourages women to embrace who they are and be themselves.

Exclusive: Jeff Staple and Puma to Release a New Clothing Line — With Sneakers, Too

Legendary streetwear designer Jeff Staple has collaborated with Puma in the past, but this time around, he helped with the creation of an apparel collection with the athletic standout.

Don’t be alarmed, sneaker fans: There’s footwear in the collection, too.

The performance-based collection for spring ‘17, dubbed Puma NTRVL, was created using life in a major city as inspiration, designed to be worn at the gym or out on the town.

The Puma NTRVL line has five of Puma’s staple styles (pun intended): three running looks (Ignite EvoKnit, Ignite 3, Limitless) and a pair of sports-inspired classics (Clyde and BOG Sock). The three performance-based models boast Ignite, the brand’s energy transferring and shock absorbing cushioning compound.

The sneaker looks all boast split-colored uppers with opposite colorblocking on the medial and lateral sides, and are executed in the designer’s signature pink and pigeon gray tones.

To combine fashion with fitness, the apparel and accessories — designed with polka-dot print and reflective details — consist of a formal suit jacket, track pants, a sneaker bag and a five-panel cap.

The Puma NTRVL line drops March 18 on reedspace.com, with a global launch on puma.com, at Puma stores and select retailers on March 25.
