Pink Dolphin Shares Design Inspiration Behind Puma ‘Wave of Glory’ Collab

Standout streetwear label Pink Dolphin has worked with brands to release sought-after collabs on iconic silhouettes. Its latest work with Puma is no different.

The first drop of the Pink Dolphin x Puma “Wave of Glory Capsule” arrived on Sept. 17 at Pink Dolphin stores and via pinkdolphinonline.com, with a broader launch last Friday at Footaction, Puma Lab powered by Foot Locker, and City Gear. The latest collection between the streetwear brand and the athletic label produced two new iterations of the Blaze of Glory, a beloved style among sneaker enthusiasts.

“The Blaze of Glory has always been one of my favorite models from Puma,” Cena Barhaghi, co-founder of Pink Dolphin, told Footwear News. “It’s a little bit more of a progressive shoe — it’s a tech runner — and I was pretty excited they let us run with that model. We built all the apparel off the runner — the collection is all tech-runner futuristic, [and] it’s functional but we mixed in fleece to give it street style so it’s not super-sports.”

When brainstorming ideas for the collection, Barhaghi said he looked off-shore for inspiration.

“When we first conceptualized this particular collaboration, we started with a mood board, [and] everything was based off deep-sea corals. That’s where all the colors come from — an underwater theme,” he said.

Barhaghi and co-founder Neima Khaila visited New York City last Friday to discuss the collection with the press thanks to Footaction, a partner Khaila is particularly fond of.

“We’re particular about who we partner with as far as retailers, and they’ve been a world-class partner for us, doing a great job merchandising our stuff in a way that consumers can really understand where we come from and what we’re trying to accomplish,” he said.

The shoes and apparel are available now, with the shoes retailing for $140 each.

Barhaghi also confirmed with FN that Pink Dolphin is working on another collaboration with Puma, this time using some of the brand’s new styles, which is expected to arrive in stores in February or March.

Rihanna’s Puma Creepers will be available once again — and in the original colorways.

On Thursday, fans can get their hands on the sneakers worn by Gigi Hadid and Cara Delevingne in black-and-white, beige and all-black with a gum sole color options.

The Creepers debuted in September 2015 for presale on Puma.com in the three original colors. That selection sold out in three hours. The shoes officially went on sale two weeks later and sold out again. Since then, Puma and Rihanna have launched multiple releases, including new Creeper styles and colors, but the brand has never restocked its first launch.

Instagram Photo

Puma and Rihanna have come a long way since the initial release one year ago.

Rihanna recently launched her fall ’16 Puma line with Bergdorf Goodman, and it includes pointed heel laceups and wedge combat boots. The “Needed Me” singer is also debuting her spring ’17 collection today during Paris Fashion Week.

Other Creeper colorways have included camo print, the White Glo, Black Satin and the Green-Bordeaux.

The Creeper style, created by Rihanna with input from menswear brand Mr. Completely, takes inspiration from London and New York’s ’80s punk bands. It’s an update on the classic Puma Suede style, which was originally embraced by athletes in the ’70s and then by punk bands and skaters in the ’80s.

To purchase the original colorways, head to Puma.com on Thursday.

Sneak Peek: Streetwear Label Trapstar Talks Second Puma Collab Design

Streetwear standout Trapstar’s first launch with Puma didn’t sit on shelves for long. Its second drop, due in stores this week, is likely to sell similarly.

The second installment of the London-based lifestyle label’s fall ’16 collaboration with Puma arrives first on trapstarlondon.com on Thursday, with a broader global release via Puma’s top retail partners on Saturday. Aside from the apparel being released, Trapstar will deliver a pair of interpretations of Puma’s Cell Bubble silhouette.

One of the two Cell Bubble styles boasts its signature White Noise print, reminiscent of the snow-like static often seen on older TV screens when a channel was out.

“It’s a symbol of the focus, of what it took for Trapstar to get to where it is now,” said Rahmuhl Nurse, who works in U.S. operations for Trapstar.

Aside from the White Noise print on the shoe’s upper, the look features red on its collar, lace lock and outsole, with black on the midsole and the heel counter.

The second Cell Bubble offering from Trapstar features a simpler look, opting for a black and white color palette instead of a bold print. The upper is predominantly black, and a white midsole separates the upper from its black midsole.

“We have an extreme part where we may do some wild, funky stuff, and we have another side where we want to do something subtler,” said Will Trapstar, co-founder of the label. “It made sense to do two designs of the shoe. We wanted to give people the best of both worlds and something we both like.”

Although Trapstar has worked with Puma on a pair of releases already, the label confirmed another collaboration will make its way to stores in spring ’17.

The Front Row at Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma Show Featured a Gaggle of Supermodels

With Doutzen Kroes, Jourdan Dunn and Sara Sampaio in attendance, the scene at Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show was a veritable supermodel sweep at Paris Fashion Week.

Staged today in Paris’ Hotel Salomon de Rothschild, guests entered via a suitably chic black carpet (what else?) and were met with a chandelier lying in the middle of the atrium as if it had crashed to the floor. It probably hadn’t, but it’s typical of Rihanna to bring the house down before she’d even showed her collection.

Kores teamed her Fenty cropped tracksuit combo (a tricky little number with all those pesky fasteners) with Stella McCartney platform brogues.

The model, who appeared in the new L’Oréal lipstick campaign alongside Irina Shayk, Lara Stone and Karlie Kloss, confided that she was confirmed Thursday for Balmain and Isabel Marant. As for the rest of the week, she said,”We will see.”

The location was no accident and the 18th-century ceiling frescos of the venue proved a perfect backdrop for the collection — not least the brocade prints and pearl embellishments that brought a touch of Marie Antoinette to RiRi’s signature streetwear. And although there was no cake in evidence, there was an awful lot of champagne — served from gilded jeroboams.

Could The Weeknd Be Puma’s Next Brand Ambassador?

$

The Weeknd is officially back in action. The singer revealed the artwork and title for his forthcoming album, “Starboy,” and released the lead single of the same name last week. Today, The Weeknd debuted the official video for “Starboy.”

Instagram Photo

In the music video, directed by Grant Singer, The Weeknd’s past is seemingly being destroyed — along with his signature hairstyle. He is most noticeably rocking a much shorter haircut, and in between the dark hues of light, Puma sneakers are spotted.

The unidentifiable Puma style appears to feature an all-black upper and a lateral Puma logo, which begs the question: Would The Weeknd be a strong ambassador for the athletic brand?

The Weeknd Starboy Puma

Puma sneakers spotted in The Weeknd’s “Starboy” music video.

If he did become a Puma representative, he’d join the current wave of ambassadors, which includes model Cara Delevingne, reality star Kylie Jenner, Snapchat personality YesJulz and the brand’s women’s creative director, Rihanna. For Puma’s fall ’16 Suede campaign, the company spoke about putting the spotlight on “a young roster of tastemakers currently making waves in the music and entertainment arena.” The Weeknd’s new album is set to drop on Nov. 25, and his single is already on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, so in his case, making waves may be an understatement.

Puma has focused much of its attention on the women’s market, and it could be time for the label to focus its efforts on a prominent male force.

The Weeknd isn’t a stranger to the fashion world, either. In November, Alexander Wang and The Weeknd collaborated on a capsule collection called WANGXO. The line was co-designed by Wang and The Weeknd’s XO brand. High-top black and white sneakers were featured in the collection, which The Weeknd was seen wearing during his Beauty Behind the Madness Tour.

Other ambassadors aligned with Puma include rappers Meek Mill, Young Thug and Rae Sremmurd, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and golf pro Rickie Fowler.

Watch the music video for “Starboy” below, and check out The Weeknd on the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live,” airing this weekend.

Updated: The Weeknd has announced his official partnership with Puma, which will include a PumaXO shoe and clothing line set for 2017.

Rihanna Antoniette? It does have a certain ring to it, right?

The Bad Gal herself was on hand to show her second Fenty by Rihanna collection in collaboration with Puma today at Paris Fashion Week. And she clearly got into the French spirit, fusing Rococo flourishes with her signature Royal Riri sportif swagger.

Sure, there were mad mixes of corsetry, lace baseball caps, big pearls and bigger-still hoodies, but what saved the show from music-video costume territory were those very sellable shoes of hers.

Rihanna followed up the success of last season’s Creeper sneakers with a serrated sole platform combat sneaker — for him and her. Shower sandals and trainers in pleasing khaki and blush were done in something a shiny material resembling satin tied into oversize bows.

And stiletto sneakers made a comeback, too, this time as tall boots and mules. The pastel palette perked them right up. Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault certainly seemed content to have attached the previously fourth-fiddle athletic brand garnering the spotlight again.

The singer took her bow swathed in the shade from head to toe. She smiled and waved while making a quick round to raised iPhones, calling to mind her current hit with Calvin Harris, “This Is What You Came For.”

Puma just added another ambassador to it’s already star-studded roster: The Weeknd.

The athletic label announced today that the Grammy-winning artist is now a global brand ambassador and creative collaborator.

According to the brand, The Weeknd’s laidback and streetwise style makes him the ideal partner to promote the latest Puma Sportstyle campaign, dubbed “Run The Streets,” which is set to launch in November. Puma said the campaign was shot in L.A. and Toronto by photographer Mark Seliger, and will be showcased in Puma stores and across its digital platforms globally.

As part of the partnership, The Weeknd will push some of Puma’s Sportsyle products such as the Ignite Evoknit and Ignite Limitless silhouettes, as well as its Evo apparel.

Aside from wearing the latest Sportstyle products, the musician will also have his own designed collection of sneakers and apparel, a line Puma states is “a fusion of Puma’s sport-inspired designs and The Weeknd’s street-motivated aesthetics as seen in his label, XO.” The collection will arrive in stores in 2017.

The Weeknd was spotted in Puma kicks in his latest music video for his album’s title track, “Starboy,” featuring Daft Punk.

Hosting the program’s season premiere gave Robbie an opportunity to showcase her comedic chops after winning fans over as the breakout star of this summer’s “Suicide Squad.” In the action film, she portrays Harley Quinn, a psychotic villain who wrecks havoc in Jeremy Scott x Adidas heels. The shoes from Scott’s 2014 collaboration with the sportswear brand includes a 130 mm heel and the signature Adidas stripes in a high-top boot silhouette.

Pop star The Weeknd was the night’s musical guest. While on the show, he participated in “The Weeknd Update” sketch and acknowledged with deadpan delivery his recent haircut.

The Grammy-winning artist was announced on Thursday as Puma’s new global brand ambassador and creative collaborator. Part of his deal includes his own collection of sneakers and apparel due next year that the brand describes as “a fusion of Puma’s sport-inspired designs and The Weeknd’s street-motivated aesthetics as seen in his label, XO.”

Is the Golf Business Still Worthwhile for Shoe Companies?

$
0
0

While professional golfers continue to sign new contracts and renew existing ones with big-name athletic brands, the relationship between shoe labels and the sport of golf remains strained.

With megaspecialty golf retailer Golfsmith International Holdings Inc. filing for bankruptcy on Sept. 14 and listing Adidas, Nike and Puma among its top creditors with unsecured claims, the tension continues to mount.

Is the golf business still a worthwhile one for shoe companies?

Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer signaled last year that he was ready to exit the golf business altogether after the company’s golf unit continued to experience decelerated growth. In the second quarter of 2015, after the golf division suffered currency-neutral revenue declines of 26 percent, Hainer suggested that he was considering a divestiture. He later said he would cut the TaylorMade-Adidas Golf workforce by 14 percent by the end of 2015.

This year, the company has seen a payoff from several strategic initiatives in the division with TaylorMade Golf turning positive again in Q2 — seeing gains of 7 percent. And last month, Adidas 2016 U.S. Open winner Dustin Johnson renewed their partnership.

For its part, Nike seems to be leaning toward weakening its ties with golf. In August, news broke that the company would exit the golf equipment business, and CFO and EVP Andrew Campion said in September that the move is part of a shift toward a “long-term focus” on driving greater growth and profitability in footwear and apparel.

Meanwhile, Puma — owed nearly $2 million by bankrupt Golfsmith for its Cobra Puma Golf product — is maintaining a steady presence in the golf space. The brand released its Ignite Spikeless Sport Golf Shoe in June and added Bryson DeChambeau (who turned pro this year) to its endorsement roster, which also includes PGA star Rickie Fowler.

Skechers USA Inc. has also gotten aggressive with its golf business — extending its contract with PGA veteran Matt Kuchar in April and adding pro players Russell Knox and Ashlan Ramsey to the list of athletes representing its Go Golf division.

For now, it seems to be a mixed bag for shoe companies and golf. Perhaps only time will tell which way the pendulum ultimately swings.

The collection drops on Saturday at ShopBop, Free People, Atlanta’s WISH and Boston’s Bodega.

Inspired by Careux’s life journey, the kicks incorporate the artist’s signature “dedication flower,” which celebrates beauty and strength. Other design treatments include a suede upper, mesh tongue and speckled midsole. The interior is emblazoned with floral graphics, too, as well as a rose-shaped accessory that’s adorned at the top of the lace hole.

Available in rose and black, the shoes retail for $80.

Kylie Jenner stepped out in bombshell style on her latest outing.

The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star made her way to meetings on Friday in Los Angeles wearing an eye-catching ensemble that highlighted her curves.

The Puma ambassador had on cropped gray shirt and trousers that featured a mile-wide split by Bryan Hearns and Stuart Weitzman’s Nudist heels.

Her athlesiure-like number incorporated chainlink fastenings from the hip down to the ankle, and the design treatment was included around her top’s bust.

The E! fixture wisely teamed the sizzling outfit with minimalist footwear. The white leather Nudist sandals feature an adjustable buckle ankle strap and 4.5-inch stiletto heel, available for $398 on the label’s website.

Jenner is embracing her body confidence. She shared on her app, which launched earlier that day, that she gained 16 pounds and is thrilled to have a fuller figure. “[I haven’t had] ass implants,” she shared during a Q&A session. “You know, I used to be 120 [lbs.]. I was really skinny. Now I’m pushing like 136. But it’s alright, I like the chunkiness.”

Instagram Photo

The social media star also addressed plastic surgery rumors, shooting down gossip that she’s had breast implants. “I’ve thought about [getting breast implants], but I’m like, why ruin it?” she said. “I have really good boobs naturally and they’re a cute little size. I’m not against it, but right now, it’s a no from me.:”

Nor has she undergone any major procedures to her jaw, she insisted. “People starting saying that [when] I was like 16. You think Kris Jenner, at 16 years old, would let me get cheek and jaw reconstructive surgery? Nah,” she said. “I always used to love my jaw – I never was self-conscious about my jaw.”

“For an island girl like me to carry such a prestigious brand like Puma from just the athleticism of the brand to glamour — and bring it all the way to Bergdorf Goodman — is such a big deal for me. It makes me feel very special. Thank you, guys, for taking a chance on me. I can’t believe my fans can come here and buy my collection,” she said at the time.
