The iconic Super Mario video game franchise is 35 years old, and Puma and Nintendo are using footwear to celebrate the anniversary.

For the milestone, Nintendo reimagined the Puma RS-Dreamer sneaker, which is the popular debut signature basketball shoe of rap superstar J. Cole. The Nintendo x Puma RS-Dreamer “Super Mario 64” features nods to the beloved video game and design elements fans are sure to notice.

The look is executed in a red, white and blue color scheme. The upper is primarily red with blue overlays and hits of silver and yellow. The midsole features blue tones and white, and the shoe is completed with a white outsole. Sticking with the Super Mario theme is the game’s logo on the tongue.

The court-ready shoe is equipped with top-tier Puma tech such as its ProFoam midsole with energy-returning RS-Foam in the heel, high-abrasion rubber outsoles and a disruptive cord lacing system to keep the fit snug.

Neymar Signs Deal With Puma After Parting Ways With Nike

Following weeks of speculation, Neymar Jr. has finalized an endorsement deal with Puma.

The sportswear giant confirmed the long-term partnership, which was also signed with NR Sports, which holds the image rights of the athlete. As part of the agreement, the Brazilian soccer star will not only wear Puma cleats on the pitch, but also serve as a brand ambassador off the field.

Both Puma and Neymar announced the news on social media, along with the banner, “The king is back.” On Twitter, Puma wrote, “Welcome to the fam.”

CEO Bjørn Gulden also commented on the deal. “Neymar Jr. joining our Puma family is fantastic,” he said. “He is one of the best players in the world and extremely influential for the global football and youth culture. We are very excited and look forward to working with him both on and off the pitch.”

In addition, Neymar — whose full name is Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior — took to the social networking platform to issue a statement. He reminisced about his childhood, watching videos of football legends including Pelé, Johan Cruyff and Diego Maradona — all of whom were sponsored by the German brand.

“I wish to bring back the legacy that those athletes created on the pitch,” wrote the Paris Saint-Germain forward. “I want to help bring back memories from each of their football histories and the magic they gave us in their classic leather boots — and through boots like those, leave behind my own legacy. They each played in Puma, and each of them created their magic in The King.” (The shoe debuted in the late 1960s and was worn by the aforementioned athletes.)

He added, “Every time I lace my boots — my King boots — I will do anything to achieve all of my dreams to honor my name and that of all those great ones who wore the King before me. This will be my Puma history. The King is back!”

The announcement comes two weeks after Neymar and Nike ended their high-profile 15-year partnership. In a late August email to FN, the Beaverton, Ore.-based company confirmed that Neymar was no longer an athlete ambassador of the brand. The pro footballer had also helped deliver the first-ever soccer range for the athletic behemoth’s Jordan Brand label in October 2016, which made Neymar the first player to don Jumpman branding on the pitch.

How Cult NY Street Wear Label KidSuper Teamed Up With Puma on a Capsule Collection Inspired by the Founder’s Love of Soccer

Hot on the heels of its Neymar signing, Puma is adding to its soccer scorecard. The sports giant is teaming up with cult street wear label KidSuper.

Puma and KidSuper are collaborating on a capsule collection inspired by KidSuper founder Colm Dillane’s love of soccer. There are to be two drops with the first hitting stores this week, Sept.17.

KidSuper x Puma features garments, accessories and five shoe styles — KidSuper takes on the Puma Style Rider, Nitefox, Cell Dome Sock, Oslo City and Wilo slide. The look is retro and colorful with soccer inspired prints and KidSuper signature doodle graphics.

While all the shoes in the collection are takes on archival or current Puma designs, the Cell Dome sock is based on a ’60s running shoe with Velco fastenings. “It got banned from the 1968 Olympics because it was considered too high tech for the time,” laughed Dillane. “I was like ‘I HAVE to use this.”

Since KidSuper launched some 10 years ago, the brand has been growing organically, Dillane clocking up small-scale localized customization projects with Nike and Adidas in New York. This, however, is his first major global collaboration.

We discussed the project earlier in the summer, during a WhatsApp call. Dillane was at home in New York, filling up the swimming pool hastily dug out in his Brooklyn backyard to beat the soaring temperatures. Because that’s the way he rolls.

“It takes up the entire space,” he said. “You can’t even open the door now so you have to jump in from the second floor window. I’m thinking of charging the public $20 a swim.”

He may or may not have been joking about the last bit. After all, this is they guy who began his entrepreneurial career selling T-shirts in his school cafeteria and started KidSuper while still studying.

Dillane revealed that all the big three sportswear labels had reached out to him but he chose Puma because they offered him the best deal.

In fact, Puma gave him completely free reign, he said.

“They allowed me to anything I wanted, like completely remake the uppers,” he said. The only stipulation was that he had to use the Puma soles. He admits that he was shocked. “I couldn’t believe they would approve what I wanted to do.”

Designers can often take their brand partnerships for granted added the KidSuper founder.  “You see a lot of collaborations getting a ton of hype, but often really not doing anything apart from changing the colors.”

So what does this sort of partnership do for a brand like KidSuper — currently sold just on his own e-commerce, his little shop-cum-studio in Brooklyn and a handful of specialized stores?

“We’ll now be sold in every Puma store across the world, It legitimizes it and brings us to the next level,” he said, adding that he’s also checking off many of his childhood dreams.

In addition to the first KidSuper x Puma capsule, he has also created a soccer cleat, part of a product release scheduled for later in the year involving Arsenal soccer star Héctor Bellerín.

“He’s the fashion guy of soccer and has even walked for Louis Vuitton,” said Dillane, revealing that Bellerin has already premiered the shoe. He wore a prototype version during a training session in June.

Dillane played on the youth team of Brazilian soccer club Vitoria when he was in high school and still plays with a local club in New York. Instead of traditional models, it’s his team mates who are pictured in the collection’s lookbook.

According to Dillane, upwards of 20,000 shoes are being produced and he is keen to challenge the market’s current preoccupation with limited editions. “Some people want to keep the numbers super low but I think coolness doesn‘t have to come from exclusivity,” he observed. “It’s more what you do creatively as a brand.”

On the subject of creativity, in addition to having free reign when it came to the designs, Dillane was also given carte blanche as to their promotion. He chose to do his own seven episode KidSuper x Puma animation series called SCRAM.

It features cartoon versions of Bellerín, Usain Bolt, Jessie Reyez, Meechy Darko, Lolo Zouai, West Side Gun an Lil Tecca.

It was created by Dillane in collaboration with the artist Rhymez like Dimz. The series which will run on the KidSuper YouTube channel from Sept. 16, has already been teased on billboards in New York’s Times Square.

Dillane made his Paris runway debut in June 2019 as part of a raft of American brands testing the waters in the French capital. Typically, his spring ’21 show was a creative highlight of Paris Men’s Fashion Week Online in July.

It involved a stop motion animation featuring Barbie dolls with 3-D-printed heads in the image of Dillane’s heroes including soccer players Pelé, Ronaldo and Maradona. All of course wore in miniature versions of the collection.

“What I loved about the virtual shows was I felt everyone on the same playing field so it was more a competition of creativity than budget,” he concluded.

And talking of budget, prices for the Puma collab are accessible to boot, ranging from $40 to $200. Puma.com

UFC Star Israel Adesanya Signs With Puma

UFC star Israel Adesanya is now a Puma ambassador.

The undefeated middleweight champion, who is set to put his 19-0 record and belt on the line Sept. 26 against Paulo Costa, revealed on social media today that he is now a Puma-backed athlete. The news was first reported by ESPN MMA insider Ariel Helwani.

Shortly after Adesanya tweeted a post sharing the announcement, Puma replied: “Welcome to the fam.”

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Puma has been active as of late with signing major sports stars. Aside from Adesanya, the German athletic powerhouse announced it added soccer star Neymar Jr. to its roster on Sept. 12. The signing confirmed speculation that circulated in late August that he was leaving Nike, his longtime sponsor, for Puma.

Puma’s addition of Adesanya comes two months after the UFC stated it was parting ways with the organization’s apparel and footwear sponsor, Reebok. Once the Reebok deal is up in March 2021, Venum will take over.

Aside from venturing into new sports with Adesanya in MMA, Puma has spent the last few years bolstering its ambassador roster with athletes in several sports, most notably basketball with the signings of RJ Barrett, Kyle Kuzma, DeMarcus Cousins, Michael Porter Jr., Deandre Ayton and several others. The brand announced it was reentering the category in June 2018 after 20 years away from the sport.

North West Teaches Her Sister How to Make a Peace Sign in Yeezy Slides

Kim Kardashian shared a series of photos of her daughters on Instagram today. In the shots, her oldest daughter North, 7, tries to teach Chicago, 2, how to make a peace sign.

North dressed in a pair of flashy camouflage overalls paired with a beige t-shirt. For shoes, she opted for a familiar pair of Yeezy slides from her dad, Kanye West’s, footwear line. Her “Earth Brown” slides feature a subdued monochromatic finish and are built to be lightweight. Retailing for $245, the slip on shoe is equipped with exaggerated flex grooves for enhanced traction.

Chicago, on the other hand, looked ready to take on a tennis match, wearing a black leotard and black gym shorts paired Adidas Yeezy Boosts.

Puma makes a similar pair in its RS-X 3 Puzzle Little Kids’ style, which features a mesh upper with suede and leather overlays and a lightweight PU midsole for cushioning. The sneakers have a rubber outsole to make for better traction and grip and retail for $70.

To Buy: RS-X 3 Puzzle Little Kids’ Shoes, $70

This isn’t the first time that North has worn shoes from her dad’s Yeezy line. In August, she took a shopping trip to her mom’s closet wearing the Yeezy Foam Runners in the “Aarat” colorway. The shoes, which are made of harvested algae foam have been compared to Croc’s classic clog but it’s unique silhouette has become a popular shoe with it’s never-before-seen accents and striking divergence from traditional sneaker lines. Each pair resells for anywhere between $550 and $721 on StockX.

Chicago also has a pair of Yeezy slides, only hers are in the “Bone” colorway. The infant silhouette style has a distinctive shark-tooth sole and a thick upper band finished with an adjustable back strap for stability. The two-year-old wore the pair for a photoshoot with North back in August.

Earlier this summer, North celebrated her 7th birthday with a Western-themed party in Wyoming. North looked stylish in Ugg boots and a neon green cow-print dress as she rode a horse with her mom. Chicago got in on the fun, too, wearing a little red dress paired with mini round-toe cowboy boots detailed with pull-tabs and Western stitching.

Update: Kanye West Apologizes a Day After Calling Puma ‘Trash’

$

Update: Sept. 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. ET

Yesterday, Kanye West was talking disrespectfully about Puma. Today, he is apologizing.

The rapper took to Twitter again today, this time revealing he spoke with Kareem “Biggs” Burke, who cofounded West’s former record label home, Roc-A-Fella Records. In the tweet, West also apologized to Jay-Z and Roc Nation lifestyle specialist Emory Jones.

“Speaking Biggs now … I shouldn’t have said anything about Puma publicly … I apologize to Emory and Jay and the entire Puma crew,” West tweeted today.

What We Originally Reported on Sept. 18, 2020

Kanye West has been tweeting up a storm as of late. Today’s social media commentary from the rapper-turned-designer included a bold statement about the label that delivers his Yeezy footwear and a shot at a rival athletic brand.

“I am the head of adidas,” West wrote in a tweet today. “I will bring adidas and puma back together and bring me and jay back together … all pumas designs are embarrassingly trash but I will personally design puma and adidas and make everything ok.”

West’s “Jay” mention is a reference to longtime music collaborator Jay-Z, who is affiliated with Puma.

Both Puma and Adidas declined FN’s request for comment.

Although the shot at Puma on Twitter today is jarring, it’s not the first time West has taken aim at the brand publicly before. On Feb. 9, 2016, the rapper proclaimed on Twitter that sister-in-law Kylie Jenner was “1000% Kylie is on Yeezy team” and that “1000% there will never be a Kylie Puma anything. That’s on my family!”

West’s proclamation, however, proved to be incorrect. Jenner signed a deal days later with Puma on Feb. 17, 2016.

There have been shakeups at Adidas as of late that have impacted his Yeezy brand. FN obtained an email on Sept. 1 that was sent to Adidas employees revealing Jon Wexler, who was the GM of Yeezy, was leaving Adidas. A day later, West tweeted a thank you to Wexler. “This man changed the game with our Adidas deal and helped to bring adidas to a 62 billion dollar market cap and made me a multi billionaire,” West wrote. “Thank you Jon. You changed my life.”

Also on Sept. 1, West appeared on Nick Cannon’s “Cannon’s Class” and stated Adidas should let him wear Air Jordans, despite the shoes being made by Adidas rival Jordan Brand (a company backed by Nike). “In my Adidas contract, I definitely should be able to wear Jordans. Jordans need to be part of reparations. You can’t tell a Black man not to wear Jordans,” West said with a laugh. “Any deal [should say], ‘But you could wear Jordans.'”

Snipes and Puma to Bring Kiosks to Stores for National Voter Registration Day

Snipes and Puma are celebrating National Voter Registration Day in an impactful way.

The European sneaker retailer — which made its U.S. debut with the KicksUSA acquisition in May 2019 — and the sportswear brand have teamed up to place voter registration kiosks in 95 Snipes stores stateside.

In a statement, Snipes said customers can either use the Vengo kiosk or a QR code scanning sign that will bring up their local state voting site.

At four specific stores — three in Philadelphia stores and the debut Snipes 2.0 store at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY — there are interactive Vengo kiosks that will not only offer voter registration links but will also dispense reusable custom Snipes and Puma branded #UseYourVoice masks. The remaining Snipes stores will feature in-store signage with QR codes that once scanned will bring customers to the voter registration site in their respective state.

Once the customer uses the kiosk or the QR code, Snipes said the user will be asked questions in a survey about voter registration status and their state of residence, which will lead to information about how to register and vote in their state.

Aside from assisting customers to register to vote, the kiosks inside Snipes stores and the QR codes will direct consumers to their state voting websites to find out information on local polling locations until Election Day, which is Nov. 3.

Although Snipes is the latest athletic retailer to announce a voter registration initiative, it’s not the first. Foot Locker, for instance, announced on Sept. 17 that it joined forces with Rock the Vote to install voter registration hubs at more than 2,000 of its namesake stores as well as Champs Sports, Footaction and Eastbay outposts to help its Gen Z consumers get to the polls. The initiatives begins tomorrow.

While some may view this choice as unconventional, slides provide a perfect recovery shoe for your feet after a heavy lifting session or after a more low impact workout like yoga or pilates where sneakers aren’t necessary.

As for Addison Rae, the TikTok phenomenon herself went with her new go-to Puma sneakers for her daily workout ensemble. The colorful kicks highlighted mixed material uppers with mesh panels and pops of neon shades across a sculpted midsole.

Her athletic outfit as well included a matching black sports bra and leggings set from the Australian activewear brand, Stax.

As for Baldwin herself, she previously worked with Levi’s to star in their summer ’20 campaign alongside Jaden Smith and most recently joined the denim brand to help launch its SecondHand upcycling initiative. She has also appeared in marketing campaigns for brands such as Guess, Zadig & Voltaire, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. What’s more, in 2016, the A-lister joined forces with Ugg, starring in the label’s Classic Street Collection campaign for fall ’16.

The media personality’s own shoe closet also includes an eclectic mix beyond her ambassadorships. On top of her go-to Nike Air Force 1 sneakers, the model has been spotted wearing sneakers from Chanel, Off-White and the Nike x Fear of God collab, as well as heels from Tabitha Simmons and Jimmy Choo. Her new go-to brand for shoes is Bottega Veneta, falling in line with trending celeb-favorite styles from the label that every “it” girl is wearing this year.

Puma Rebounds in Q3 — But Here’s What It’s Worried About in the Months Ahead

Sales and profits at Puma rebounded in the third quarter — but renewed concerns over the coronavirus pandemic has led the sportswear giant to issue caution for the months ahead.

Today, the Germany-based company posted revenues that rose a currency-adjusted 13% to 1.58 billion euros (or $1.85 billion at current exchange), as well as operating profits that improved 17% to 190 million euros (or $222.78 million). Those figures trumped analysts’ forecasts for 1.56 billion euros in sales and 174 million euros in profits.

“Retail stores reopened, sports events resumed, consumer confidence improved and our sales increased week by week,” CEO Bjorn Gulden said in a statement. “I feel this strong performance confirms the strength of both Puma as a brand and the sporting goods industry in general.”

However, the athletic firm said it could not provide a decisive outlook for the fourth quarter and the fiscal year as a recent surge in outbreaks have brought up worries over another round of government-imposed lockdowns both in areas of the United States and certain parts of Europe.

“October started well, but the recent development of COVID-19 and the number of infections we are seeing globally make us cautious for the rest of year,” Gulden shared. “We will continue to maneuver through this pandemic in the short-term without hindering Puma’s mid-term momentum.”

Over the past three months, Puma celebrated a number of big moves: In September, it inked a long-term deal with Brazilian football star Neymar Jr., who was formerly signed with rival Nike. It also launched the Ultra football boot and RS Dreamer basketball shoe; partnered with top NBA 2020 draft prospect LaMelo Ball; and saw athlete ambassadors Danny Green and Kyle Kuzma win the 2020 NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Separately, there has also been an increase in the free float of Puma shares after Kering sold about 5.9% of its stake in the brand. The luxury conglomerate has gradually reduced its ownership in Puma since 2018 and now retains 9.8% of its outstanding shares.

In preparation for a “potentially longer-lasting impact” of the current health crisis, Puma secured an addition 900 million-euro revolving credit facility in May, which has yet to be tapped.

The “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” star posed for the athletic label today to preview its upcoming winter edit, dropping Nov. 1 at Fabletics.com, in a cozy red cowl-neck sweater and tie-leg leggings.

As if her athleisure-chic ensemble wasn’t already on-trend, the actress made sure to include a set of chic streetwear-inspired sneakers. The kicks come from Puma’s hit collaboration with Chinese streetwear brand Randomevent as they reimagined the athletic label’s Alien Cell silhouette. The chunky, 1990s-era sneakers feature mixed material uppers with suede overlays and an unmissable yellow panel with graphic text.

Complete with exposed cushioning in the heel and a textured outsole, the Puma x Randomevent Alien Cell sneakers retail in limited sizes at Puma.com for $110; more sizes are available at Yoox.com as well for $115.

Beyond creating Fabletics, Kate Hudson’s experience in the fashion industry is neverending. She partnered with New York & Company in 2018 as an ambassador and has previously starred in campaigns for Jimmy Choo, Ann Taylor, La Mer and Michael Kors amongst others. For her more formal occasions, the “Almost Famous” alumna can be found in everything from Zuhair Murad Couture to Atelier Versace and Reem Acra. Today’s version came in the form of Puma Cool Cat V sandals, an adjustable recovery pair meant for ease of wear and added cushioning. Slides are yet another sandal silhouette considered to be less high-fashion in the industry yet more and more stars are including them into their looks this season. Along with a revitalization of traditionally “ugly” sandals like pairs from Birkenstock and Teva, comfort footwear is quickly becoming all the rage amongst the increased appeal of relaxed trends and comfortable style during the pandemic.

Kering Is Selling More of Its Stake in Puma

$

Kering said on Monday it was selling about 8.8 million shares that it owns in Puma, representing 5.9% of the German sporting good-maker’s share capital, through a placement to qualified investors.

“The proceeds of this transaction will be used for the general corporate purposes of Kering and will further strengthen its financial structure,” the French luxury group said in a statement.

Kering’s share price has recovered to its levels at the start of 2020, after plummeting by as much as 39% in March as the coronavirus pandemic shut stores and brought factories to a halt.

Since 2018, the group gradually reduced its stake in Puma after spinning off 70% of the company to its shareholders as part of a plan to refocus on its luxury division. That move left the Pinault family’s private investment arm Artémis with a 29% stake, and Kering with around 16%.

After the latest transaction, Kering will retain 9.8% of Puma’s outstanding shares, it said. Artémis was reported to have issued a convertible bond this summer that reduced its stake to around 25%, although the company could not be reached at the time to confirm the operation.

Update: Nov. 12, 2020 at 4:45 p.m. ET

At the start of the week, Porsche teased a new collection of shoes with Puma that are inspired by the 911 Turbo, and to get a pair you would have to act fast because the pre-sale lasted for just 2.7 seconds. Today, the German athletic footwear brand revealed the eight looks that will be featured.

The line is divided into two collections: “Air-Cooled” and “Water-Cooled.” The Puma Future Rider was used for the “Air-Cooled” looks, which represent the first four generations of air-cooled 911 Turbos: Type 930 3.0 L and 3.3 L, Type 964 and Type 993. The Puma Speedcat was used for the “Water-Cooled” sports cars: Type 996, 997, 991 and 992.

According to Puma, there will only be 500 pairs of each design made and are executed in colors that tie to original Porsche hues including Riviera Blue, Guards Red, Saffron Yellow Metallic and GT Silver Metallic.

The shoes will come with a $150 price tag and will be available on Nov. 17 online via Puma.com and Porsche-design.com. Also, pairs can be purchased in store at the Puma flagship store in New York, at the Porsche Design stores in Los Angeles, Miami and Houston, and at the Porsche Experience Centers in Atlanta and L.A.

What We Originally Reported on Nov. 10, 2020

Porsche has a new line of Puma shoes inspired by the 911 Turbo on the way — and if you want a pair, you better act fast.

The German high-performance car manufacturer — in what its calling “the world’s fastest sneaker pre-release” — is set to deliver shoes inspired by the 911 Turbo via Porsche-design.com. There is a countdown clock on the e-commerce platform now, and when it hits zero a buy button will appear that will last for just 2.7 seconds. The time is significant because its how long it takes for the 911 Turbo to go from 0 to 60 mph.

The pre-sale is scheduled for Nov. 16. The release of the shoe is Nov. 17.

However, there’s much more time for you to pay for your shoes. Porsche said after selecting the sneakers during the pre-sale that customers have to buy them within 15 minutes to complete the order.

This limited-edition collection of Puma shoes, according to Porsche, feature nods to the 911 Turbo including colorways inspired by popular period-specific paint colors and elements such as the iconic rear wing, lightbars, interiors and body lines.

Although Porsche announced the line, it did not reveal the sneaker models it has reimagined. And on the website, the eight shoes are blurred out, only revealing the color palettes.

Additionally, the pre-orders will come with a limited-edition poster inspired by the collection.

Porsche Design has been a Puma partner since 2019 and the two have delivered several high-end sneakers with performance in mind. The last silhouettes were released in August, a trio of shoes using the German sportswear brand’s new Xetic cushioning technology: Xetic M, Xetic M Shift and Xetic L.

Puma just added some star power to its already robust ambassador roster: Dua Lipa.

The German sportswear giant announced today that it signed a multiyear deal with the singer-songwriter, who will be the face of its women’s business. Aside from boosting the profile of Puma’s women’s business unit, Lipa will work to “help inspire women around the world” through global campaigns and “important inclusive initiatives close to her heart.”

“From performance rehearsals to hiking in the hills, it’s important to feel comfortable & look good. I’ve got so many ideas for the projects and campaigns I’ll be taking part in and look forward to bringing them all to life with my Puma family,” Lipa said in a statement.

Aside from revealing the deal, Puma stated Lipa will star in its “She Moves Us” campaign, which was created to inspire women to achieve and connect through sport and culture.

“We were drawn towards her creativity, passion, drive and the way in which she resonates with the young female consumer. But most importantly, we were moved by her authentic passion to close the gender gap and look forward to supporting her through several brand initiatives we have planned together. We think she embodies what today’s consumer is looking for in a role model,” Puma global director of brand and marketing Adam Petrick said in a statement.

To kick off the partnership, Puma said it will be the presenting sponsors of Lipa’s “Studio 2054” virtual performance. Not only will the pop star and her dancers be in Puma head-to-toe, but the brand is also offering a limited amount of tickets for the performance at a discount to her fans.

The athletic powerhouse has been busy in recent months adding to its ambassador roster. In September, Puma signed UFC champion Israel Adesanya and soccer star Neymar Jr. And in October, it added promising soon-to-be NBA rookie LaMelo Ball.

Diego Maradona, Argentina Soccer Icon, Dies

$

Diego Maradona, who is regarded as one of the greatest soccer players — if not the greatest — of all time, has died. He was 60.

According to multiple reports, Maradona suffered a heart attack Wednesday at his home in Tigre, a city north of Buenos Aires. He was at home recovering from brain surgery he underwent this month to remove a blood clot on his brain.

The decorated Argentinian athlete had a career to remember, being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year four times and leading Argentina to a World Cup win over England in 1986.

Maradona — who famously wore the No. 10, which is reserved by teams for their best player — was a longtime Puma ambassador, and wore the boot on the pitch laced up by legends: the Puma King.

“The best players in the world, the players that wore the number 10, players that really made the difference, wore the King,” Puma senior marketing advisor Helmut Fischer told FN in 2018. “Pelé, Eusébio in the ’60s, Johan Cruyff from the ’70s, Diego Maradona — the very best [soccer] players in the world all wore the Puma King.”

With news of his death, Puma CEO Björn Gulden shared a tribute on his personal Instagram account. “RIP Diego. The best player I have ever seen!” the executive wrote.

The brand also emailed FN a statement on Maradona’s passing.

“Diego Maradona was one of the greatest players of all time. We are honored that he chose to work with Puma for the entirety of his career and beyond. As a member of our Puma family, we are deeply saddened by the news of his death. Our thoughts are with his family and fans of great football around the world,” the company wrote.
